Your Business is Like Your Lawn

Do you remember the days when the TY® company couldn’t make enough Beanie Babies® to fill the supply?  It seemed like everyone was collecting them.  People would line up before the stores even opened in the morning.  It was crazy!

What would cause people to behave like that?


That’s right, scarcity.  When there isn’t enough to go around, everyone wants it!

The same is true of you too!

Let me explain.

When you make yourself a limited availability resource, people will want more.  And, you are a limited resource — after all you can only do so many parties each week, right?  You can capitalize on this fact by giving your potential hostess a limited number of choices to choose from when she books a party.   

Here’s how.

  1. Create a list of your upcoming dates you are available to do parties.
  2. Fill in the hostesses* that have already selected dates (if you are just starting, fill in your Mom’s name in one of the dates to make yourself not look completely empty!).
  3. Make sure that your list does not contain more than 5-7 available dates (more than that tends to make it hard for people to choose).
  4. When someone decides to book a party, present this list to choose a party date.

Here’s an example of what it might look like:

Friday, May 17 at 7 PM

Thursday, May 23 at 7 PM

When your potential hostess looks at the list it serves her in the following ways

  1. She sees that you are in demand. Therefore you must be good at what you do and she feels more confidence, plus
  2. She only has to choose from a limited number of times, which reduces overwhelm and makes her more likely to make a decision.

The Open Date list serves you in the following ways:

  1. Gives you complete control of your schedule (you only offer the dates that work  best for you).
  2. Provides an easy way to communicate your availability to clients (no more fumbling with your personal or on-line calendar or trying to figure out your availability in the moment).

Before you know it, your clients will be scrambling to book parties with you and you’ll be as much in demand as Beanie Babies® were!
