Are you reluctant to set a big goal? Goals can be scary because you might have to do something you’ve never done before. You might get rejected. And, if you don’t accomplish the goal, you could feel embarrassed or disappointed.
Let’s look at it a different way. Imagine you set a big goal — something huge, hairy and audacious. Then work toward that goal. Even if you don’t accomplish it today or tomorrow or by the end of the year, what’s going to happen? Will your customers get together and agree to never work with you again? Actually the reverse is true — your business will be better just because you set the goal and worked toward it. And, it turns out, there are other benefits as well. Let me explain.
The first time I set a goal to achieve an incentive trip, I didn’t earn it.
The second time I set a goal to achieve an incentive trip, I didn’t earn it.
I finally earned the incentive trip the third time I set the goal.
The first time I set the goal to earn an incentive trip, I didn’t earn it — however, I did multiply my business by a factor of 3. Wow! I’ll be honest, I didn’t really believe that I would earn the trip. What I did believe is that if I tried, I would grow my business. And that was true. And, it inspired me to try again — I figured, hey what’s the worst that can happen? My business is stronger because I tried last time, it should get even stronger if I try again. So I tried again.
The second time I set the goal to earn an incentive trip, I didn’t earn it. I got about 2/3 of the points I needed to earn the trip and my business again grew. Plus, I got a bonus benefit. I actually began to believe that earning the trip was possible for me!
The third time I set the goal to earn an incentive trip, I earned it! And again, my business grew. I was able to contribute to the family budget, even paying for my son’s 1st year of college! I went on to earn another 6 incentive trips after that!
When I started this journey I did not believe I could earn an incentive trip or pay for college. It wasn’t until I actually tried that I developed the ability to believe. In the meantime, my business got stronger and stronger. So don’t wait until you believe you can do it — get started now and you’ll develop the belief!
